May 24, while conducting Operation Cincinnati, the Sky Soldiers were alerted for immediate deployment to the II Corps Tactical Zone. Within 24 hours of notifications the first elements of the Brigade were moving by C-130 aircraft from Bien Hoa to Pleiku. During the first 67 hours 2,239 personnel and 2,701 tons of supplies and equipment were transferred to the Central Highlands.

While Francis Marion was in progress, during which 173rd Paratroopers made no significant contact, increased enemy activity was being observed in the Dak To area, some 54 miles farther north. A Special Forces and CIDG unit had made contact with an estimated North Vietnamese Company. Within a few days, the entire Brigade was deployed to Dak To by airlift and convoy to begin Operation Greeley.

JUNE 22

slingload105.jpg (19904 bytes)

dmskullq.gif (5118 bytes) On June 22, A Company from 3rd Battalion, made contact with and was soon surrounded by a North Vietnamese Army Battalion. On a nearby ridge overlooking the Brigade Base Camp, two more Companies of Paratroopers were lifted into the area and began hacking their way through the mountainous terrain toward Alpha Company. Their movement became bogged down by heavy enemy sniper fire.

hill875a.jpg (85208 bytes)

Although greatly outnumbered by the wel trained North Vietnamese regulars, the men of Alpha Company fought valiantly. The communists threw several human wave assaults at the Sky Soldier perimeter. The battle raged for seven hours. Although A Company itself suffered heavy casualties, its Paratroopers dealt a crippling blow to the North Vietnamese Battalion. General William C. Westmoreland, Allied Commander, later told the Sky Soldiers at Dak To that
their efforts prevented the North Vietnamese from overrunning the Special Forces camp there.

He saluted the 173rd as one of the finest units in the history of the American fighting man.
After completing a successful operation aimed at protecting the Vietnamese rice harvest west of
Tuy Hoa during September and October, the Brigade once again deployed to Dak To, to join the 4th Infantry Division in Operation McArthur. During the ensuing battle for Dak To, the Sky Soldiers fought during their finest hour.

C1BongSonPatrol1.jpg (48059 bytes)

Tuy dmskullq.gif (5118 bytes)Hoa - Operation Bolling, nearing 4 months has accounted for 238 enemy killed in the Phuyen Province. The 173d Airborne Brigade made its largest major contact Wednesday when an element of the 3d Battalion, 503d Infantry made a Heli-borne Assault on a 'Hot' landing zone.

afterBurst1.jpg (53705 bytes)

During the bitter fighting, Sky Soldiers reported uncovering 51 communist bodies and capturing 18 small arms. The Airborne Infantrymen suffered 12 KIA's and 34 WIA during the battle that raged most of the afternoon.

A suspected NVA build-up was reported 35 miles north-northwest of
Phu Hiep, D Company was lifted into the vicinity and began clearing the area in a northerly direction when it came under small arms fire from three directions. Air strikes and artillery were called in and small arms fire was returned.

SearchanDestroy.jpg (76160 bytes)

Shortly after, A Company was lifted into the area. The assault was preceded by air strikes and artillery barrages, but when A Company reached the landing zone they were hit from three sides. Communist soldiers shot down the last helicopter load of Paratroopers. The chopper went up into flames as the Paratroopers and crew fled the burning ships. One Door Gunner was seriously injured.

C1BongSonPatrol.jpg (91451 bytes)

As fire increased from all four sides of the landing zone, air strikes and artillery hammered the enemy estimated to be at Company size. The enemy broke contact late in the afternoon.

Thursday and Friday Paratroopers continued to sweep the area for the enemy and more possible NVA bodies.

 "Radio First Termer"
by
Outlaw DJ Dave Rabbit
on
 Frequency '69'

DaveRabbitSaigon1970-71.jpg (32366 bytes)

The Official Dave Rabbit Slideshow.

30 years after the Vietnam War ended, this freelance DJ still captures the imagination of many GI's. Partly because he never got caught broadcasting to the GI's in South Vietnam over his bootleg radio frequency. Mostly because of his "in your face" broadcasting style that really angered Officers, who Dave commonly referred to as Lifers and maggots. The icing on the cake was his profanity and free-wheeling promotion of sex and drugs.

Dave Rabbit's true identity is certainly a better kept secret that anything from the Nixonian White House. We now know too much about Nixon, but very little about Rabbit and his 1971 radio sidekicks Pete Sadler and Ngyuen. It appears DJ Dave had military links to the US Air Force, as many of his on-air references are Air Force related. Some writers speculate that he stayed in Vietnam following a regular tour of duty to produce "Radio First Termer." Now that's Friggin dedication!

Dave's anti-establishment rhetoric was bolstered by acid-rock music of the 60's and intermingled with stunts, skits and fake radio announcements. Regular features included; The Weather Report with Captain Ivan Pansy, Sayings from the Latrine Walls, Swap Shop of the Air, and The Latest News. Most of his broadcasts were considered 'raunchy' back then, but that was before the internet connected to Main Street USA. Today he could easily be a late night cable TV host with very little censorship... back then he was a Ballsy radio pioneer.

Hi, I'm Gary Jacobson here at LZ Betty, enjoying the luxury of a foxhole pre-dug, with a soft textured sand dirt floor, and a lovely sloping sand-bag roof to keep out raining grenades...

Foxholes are usually dug out in the boonies after a day of hard humping,
dug with a small folding entrenching toolinfantrymen carried attached to their packs, lugging them every step of the way.

And Valentine's Day... well, it was no different than any other day. Pick a spot after a day of humping the boonies. Dig a pit in scorching earth with combat cronies
Sweating as you set up claymores and trips.
Chow down on yummy C-ration crackers and dips. Lean back and rest awhile...

Waiting for men coming to kill you while You rest ... rest ... till dreaming becomes real. Lost in fantastic imagery that is surreal in reality for All that Served.
